These ornate sequined and beaded Christmas ornaments were popular
in the 1970's. They're easy to make, or can be purchased inexpensively
at online auctions.
You will need:
- Satin covered foam balls
- Straight pins - either standard sewing pins or longer pins found in craft supply stores
- Beads of assorted shapes and sizes - metallic, pearls, colored, textured, seed beads.
- Ribbon scraps
- Sequins - plain or figural
Basically, you just use the pins to fasten sequins, ribbon and beads (either singly or in stacks) to the foam balls - that's all there is to it! It helps to draw out your design ideas on paper first. Designs can be cover the entire ornament, motifs which appear on two or four sides of the ornament work well too. If the holes in the beads are too big to fasten them with a straight pin, try making a stack of beads, with smaller ones on the top. You can also stick the pins in at angles to add interest to the design.
